Oh dear, those footnotes are certainly helpful, aren't they! I actually gave up on Villette several years ago for just this reason, and ever since I've been meaning to track down an edition which translates the French in footnotes. :D (There's French in Shirley, too, but not so much that you can't follow the plot without understanding it, so I just powered through that).
