I started to read this book with a lot of expectations because I love Lolly Willowes. In the end, when I finally finished it, I do not like it as much as I expected to like it but it is certainly a compelling novel, an interesting until the end.

(I will definitely give spoilers so don't read it if you don't want to know all the plot)

Like Lolly Willowes, Warner wrote beautifully. The story started off with Sophia and her children making their way to the lime-kiln. Since that to the part when Sophie lost her children and got to France, there are many scenes that are bizarre and strange and beautiful at the same time such as the part when her children were held above the lime-kiln and when Sophia saw the light from the lime-kiln and attempted to approach the man to ask for a child.

When Sophia finally met her husband's mistress, Minna, I was struck by the vividity of the story Minna told. It is a good story and can stand on it own.

However, the issue I have with this book is that while both Sophia and Minna were beautiful realized in many manners, they were also lacking in many parts as characters of a book. The decisions for them to be together did not feel natural and did not suit come from the personality of the characters. It was hard to imagine what had kept them together and it stressed incredulity to think that someone who was so controlled by prejudices and reason like Sophia could fall in love with Minna so quickly. The ending, therefore, did not feel rewarding. It felt like the author had been endeavouring to manipulate everything to that conclusion. The book feels didactic and does not explain the need for communism.

Mmm—it's like Lolly Willowes in those strange and beautiful little details, but as you say, a bit didactic!
